| Umino Iruka | |
| ★ All things to everyone... | ★ ...run, run away |
| Iruka was born to a family of seafarers, the owners of a shipping company based out of Konoha, one of the few people allowed in and out of the secret city—they did need food and other supplies after all. Traveling back and forth between the city and seacoast, then off to other lands under the magical protection of some of the strongest mages in the land was an exciting experience for the young Iruka, and even though he knew he was destined to spend his life taking over the family business, he always dreamed to be as great as those mages that protected his family on the high seas. But the ocean was where his heart lay, and he knew that he could never leave it for any amount of magic. On these long trips between opposite shores, he would often earn himself a small lesson or two in the basics of magic. He definitely had a latent magic ability, but his parents deemed it wise to keep him from learning too much. The young boy didn’t care too much, and trusted whatever his parents said. They were, altogether, a happy family, and whatever mommy and daddy wanted, he would general do…unless, of course, it involved stealing a cookie or other sweet.
All that was tragically demolished in one fell swoop. It was the middle of the war, and the Umino shipping company had vowed to continue their shipments into and out of Konoha. They had always been proud people, and weren’t about to back down. Little Iruka couldn’t do much to stop them, although he always understood the inherent danger. It was around this time that he started learning the most basic of healing magic, when his parents no longer had the time to put bandaids on his booboos, and inheriting the Umino pride, he took it like a man as much as a twelve-year-old boy could. They were bringing a shipment of salts and grains into Konoha, back after a three day round trip, when they were stopped somewhere along the path in the forest. The horses pulling the carriages seemed spooked, and even little Iruka knew that this wasn’t going to be good. The hooded figures who stopped them demanded that they turn the contents of the carts over, and Iruka’s parents naturally resisted. But in the end, it was one mage and three civilians against two, much stronger mages, and the outcome was not pleasant. Iruka was the only one left alive, along with one of the young fillies that their mare had given birth to not too long prior. Scared, half-lost, and cold, young Iruka continued down the path, trying his hardest to remember the way back to Konoha, leading the horse with him by only a hand. He was found wandering about a half mile out from Konoha, discovered by one of the guards on patrol duty and immediately led back to the city. After it was explained what happened, he was allowed to return to his family’s small home on the outskirts of the village, with someone assigned to keep an eye on him, although by then he was rather self-proficient. He spent his teenage years attending the compulsory schooling and otherwise rather friendless, lamenting in the loss of his parents, raising the horse that was now all that was left of his family’s estate. What happened to their ship back in port, he never found out and never cared to. All he knew was that he missed the sea and he missed his parents. It wasn’t until shortly after his twenty-first birthday that he found his calling. The war had left an abundance of orphans in the city, and the orphanage caretaker—the one who had kept an eye on Iruka until he was deemed safe to leave alone—was growing older with each passing day. The elderly woman called him in one evening, feeling that her day might be drawing near, and offered for Iruka to take over the orphanage. What else could he say to the person who had been his only family after his parents were murdered, the one who had made sure that he always had food and water and oats for Brandy, as he so affectionately named the chestnut-colored mare. And so Iruka came into possession of the orphanage no more than a week later. At first, he was unsure of himself. But the children seemed to take a liking to him, and he quickly picked up on how things ran in the orphanage, having “helped” run the family business way-back-when. He had finally found his calling in these children who came to depend on him so dearly. And in rather quick time, he grew fond of them as well. They all had something in common with him: they had lost their parents, just like him, yet so many of them could hold their heads up high and keep a positive outlook on life, even the younger ones. He was able to see that his years of moping had been a waste, and vowed to make his life—and theirs—better from that point on. He still runs the orphanage with a firm but gentle hand, and enjoys life so much more now that he’s stopped keeping himself locked away in his room. He smiles and laughs more than ever, and bordering on his thirtieth birthday, he’s found a renewed purpose in life. Some days, he still misses the ocean and hopes to go back there someday, but he has a duty to Konoha: to take care of its children. Somewhere along the way, he acquired the dual job of school teacher during the day, and has some of the older children—no longer children anymore, as they’ve left the orphanage and made lives for themselves—to help watch the younger children during the day while he’s gone. |
Personality
All in all, Iruka is just another kind hearted soul. He can have his moments of annoyed outbursts, but he has a very long fuse that’s pretty hard to wear down. While his concern for others might be viewed as a blessing in a world where far too many people are self absorbed, he can get a little overbearing at times, definitely living up to the mother hen stereotype. Others also tend to see him as a little immature, as he’s the type who never quite outgrew childhood. He’s not particularly stuck in his own, so much as he simply enjoys interacting with children on their level, which is a good part of the reason he started the orphanage in the first place. Magic Because of his upbringing, Iruka does not know a whole lot of magic. He knows some of the basics, a few water based spells, but mostly focuses on healing spells, which he was taught at a very young age. His magic is not that strong, but he can usually hold his own and can quite easily heal those playground cuts and scrapes.
